The speaker for the October membership meeting was Byron Carmean, shown in the background above. Mr Carmean gave a powerpoint presentation on Cypress Bridge Swamp Forest in Southampton County, where some of the largest and most unusual trees in Virginia are located.

Amateurs tried their hands at rowing a full-scale replica of Captain John Smith's 17th century shallop at the 400-year anniversary of Smith's voyage up the Nansemond River. The shallop was built by the Deltaville Maritime Museum at Deltaville, Virginia. The re-enactment of the voyage was coordinated by Suffolk Nansemond Historical Society and was part of "A Taste of Suffolk" September 13, 2008.
